3D Embossed Book by Jesvin Yeo
3D Embossed Book
3D Embossed Book
The book uses 3D embossing to document and highlight the intricate details of the works meticulously crafted by traditional Singaporean artisans, from paper dragon boats and Indian jewelry to Peranakan beaded shoes. The color pages symbolize the rise and fall of traditional crafts, as the industry begins its developmental period (dull) to its golden age (yellow) and gradually fades (white). A pastel chalk is attached for readers to shade the pages and discover the lost arts of this intangible cultural heritage of Singapore, as only we humans can safeguard, support and bring it back.

Vanishing Crafts Book
Vanishing Crafts Book
Vanishing Crafts is designed to promote the awareness of traditional crafts. It was conceived to serve as a memory project of Singapore, sharing stories of the last remaining artisans. Readers are invited to partake as co-creators. The pages are designed with lots of blank space for their curatorial input, their memory records and photographs of any traditional artisan and vanishing trade from around the world. In order for this valuable history to pass down for generations to come, a children’s storybook is included to introduce this heritage to the younger generations.

This exhibition catalogue not only captures with tenderness the texture of decorative elements of traditional Chinese temples in glorious black and white, but also the scent of a temple. It is printed with special aroma ink to recreate the atmosphere of a temple. Through visual lens, the forgotten, the ordinary and the archaic are given stature in this catalogue. It invites readers to take a second look at the overlooked and be engaged through the senses of sight and smell as memories are evoked; new possibilities are imagined and personal connections are explored.

In a new age of digital-books, this book offers a neat analogue take on scrolling through a flowing roll of texts. With a stunning array of 225 bamboo strips measuring 4.35m long, interpretations are given to images that have been archived from three century-old temples in Singapore, as they are given symbolic readings. As a limited-editioned collection, it is designed in the form of ancient Chinese scrolls to elicit the vibes of cultural imageries, as might have been similar visceral experiences felt then, in rituals of reading and pursuits of all things cultural and meaningfully endearing.

Harking back to the days when retailers in Singapore used newspaper to wrap goods, this 1950s-inspired gift paper evokes nostalgic memories of those days. Those headline news and top stories from the 1950s also form an interesting source of identity, helping the younger generation link the present to the past. The vibrant Chinese typography applied on top of the old newsprint produces a mix of the traditional and the contemporary, while creating an entirely fresh appeal and a gift-wrap suitable for any occasion. They can also be displayed as posters.
