View Profile Consult Now Hire NowThe Light Welling House is standing on a narrow site. So the designers had to think about how to bring the sunlight inside. Their solution to ensure natural lighting was to design the stairs as a path of light that would be able to distribute natural light to each room. The stairs are made of perforated metal to let the light seep through, and the stairwell has glass walls to allow the light to shine into each room as well as to lead and reflect the light from the top to lower levels. The positioning of the stairs was also a critical factor and therefore decided carefully, calculating the altitude of the winter sun.

House Mr has a split level floor plan chosen to achieve maximum value in a small footprint by the steel frame structure. The dining room hangs over a free span area that accommodates the garage. The stairs next to the patio connect each room without a corridor. Therefore, when standing in the kitchen, one can feel that the whole atmosphere of the house: from the entrance, the living and dining rooms to the Japanese tea room. The Zen style patio provides natural light to all rooms with privacy for the urban residence.

The client wanted a house had a gallery space and the flexibility that would enable him to accommodate diverse changes in daily life.The house that is a 4 m high 10 x 10 m box shape, built as a conventional wooden construction on a flat stage like - foundation, is structurally supported by the outer walls and columns for the courtyard. This enables the client to redesign the large one - room space quite easily if he wishes to do so in future to suit his life stage - as a gallery, as individual rooms, or necessary space for raising children.

The design proposes to create a station like a theatre stage - an extension of the local townscape, integrating the station with the town.The first floor is designed with highly transparent material to try and prevent any visual barriers that would create a closed off atmosphere between the plaza and station. Along with the waiting area for trains, buses, and cars, as well as the community centre.This space also serves as an observation deck and is designed so that visitors may enjoy the unique scenery of the sea, mountains, and townscape all in a single view.
