View Profile Consult Now Hire NowHouse 24 is a bungalow in Singapore that captures the idyllic setting and views of an abutting park. The design turned the challenging triangular site to its advantage by mitigating the house’s massing which comprises of two blocks - the main building that runs along the length of the site and the master suite wing tilted to correspond to the angle of the main road. The two blocks outline a V-shape courtyard at the first floor where the users can enjoy outdoor activities with the surrounding views of greenery whilst avoiding the prying eyes of passers-by.

Titled Shan Shui Shi Lin (mountain water rock forest), the project is imagined as a Chinese landscape painting, one of the oldest art forms in Chinese culture. The architects had adopted the compositional techniques of a Chinese landscape painting to create a more layered visual experience. With the school’s clock tower resting in the far background, the mid-ground defined by two blocks, and the new block strategically oriented to embrace the foreground of curated rock-scape and landscape, the project becomes an exploration for translating visual pleasure into a functional built form.

The design sought to heighten the occupants’ sensorial awareness and provide an environment that bonds a family. The scheme imagines domestic spaces connected within a flow - key to the idea of flow are notions of connection and circulation, which informed the way the spaces are composed. Departing from the conventional approach where walls are used to define space, the domestic programs are composed as interconnecting voids which opens up spaces to connect and communicate with one another, increasing familial interactions.
