China World Trade Center Phase 3C Retail by Andrew Bromberg

China World Trade Center Phase 3C Retail
China World Development is highly visible from a distance, though as one approaches the masterplan it is evident there is no "Civic Focal Point" or "front door". Phase 3C will be the missing link to unify the developments components. The proposal looks at doing this by introducing a “Civic Green” for the masterplan, which it now lacks without any continuous open space. The proposal also wants to develop a singular, powerful and obvious "front door" to the entire complex.

Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University Architecture - Education facility
The university is located in Suzhou, where the famous Taihu stone is unearthed. The design of the Administration Information Building was inspired by the porous nature of the stone due to long time of erosion. The pores and holes are transformed into a void structure with functional spaces linking up different programmes of the building. The voids also allow the building to respond to the users and surrounding context and turn it into a vessel for interaction. The different heights of voids also create a three-dimensional Suzhou garden within the building.

Some of the most fulfilling designs are those embedded and contextualised in their local culture. It was the designer’s intent from the outset to reflect, in the architectural expression, the vibrant nature of Asia, Hong Kong and Wanchai. The shading device on the hotel façade resembles a dragon; the glass bottomed cantilevered pool is considered as a pearl often associated with dragons. The hotel design also provides legibility at both the City (macro) and Human (micro) scale.

The project is the headquarters of a regional diversified business, blending with the old adjacent context and introducing the future master plan. The two faces of the complex adjacent to the roads are more solid in appearance, evolving to independent ‘L-bar’ volumes which contain all supporting services and allow adjacent offices maximum efficiency. In contrast to the’ L-bar’, the open-plan office space is ‘soft, flowing and highly transparent’ reflecting the ethos of the company.

As a regional headquarters for a major entertainment-related company, the project is distinguished from just an office building. Fulfilling the highly defined master planning guidelines, the building floats up to 13 metres above the ground with a sufficiently landscaped courtyard and a 100-person theatre. The external metallic glass skin allows for privacy on the more exposed faces and presents an aerodynamic appearance. Office areas are openly visible to the courtyard with low-iron clear glass.

The master plan composition focuses on the historical buildings and builds, in layers, responding to the site context to provide a plaza. The disposition and forms of the built elements of the scheme are influenced by pedestrian routes from key intersections to the cluster of buildings of significant historical and architectural importance. The Ming Dynasty Opera House with its soaring traditional Chinese roof and the rare Chinese vernacular houses with western architectural influence provide a delightful focus and attraction at the heart of the development.

115 Bathurst St. Mixed-use Development Architecture - Residential, arts spaces
Situated within the heart of Sydney commercial district, 115 Bathurst Street Mixed-use Development is a combination of adaptive reuse of existing structure and creation of new structure, together forming a high-rise residential tower with a podium providing spaces for public art programmes. The design was inspired by the Aboriginal geometrical line forms and contemporary sculpture of Clement Meadmore. The concept of confluence celebrates the convergence of the old and the new to create an architecture that looks confidently to the future, while acknowledging and respecting the past.

THR350 Architecture - Residential
Located at a hillside on the Hong Kong Island, this nine-storey private residence is unique to the history and context of Hong Kong. The design is inspired by a barren rock and a waterfall. The barren rock is portrayed by the uniformed lines and 1.5-metre modules on the façade, while the waterfall is reflected by the sculptural staircase. To realise the waterfall idea, the design team transformed the water into three stacking ice cubes and came up with the sculptural staircase. The design also caters for the flexibility in possible future conversion into typical apartment units.
