View Profile Consult Now Hire NowA modern conversion of a dated tract home is now home to a family whose goals were to capture the city views and have a seamless connection from interior to exterior. This project exemplifies the potentials of a well though out remodel. What the original house once lacked is now in its past. Natural light floods all interior spaces. Composed volumetric interiors have established hierarchy and order to the home. Large openings now face the dominate view and can open up to connect the exterior to the interior.

Sited on a corner lot in an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles, the project embraces aspects and theory seen in the International Style and Modern Movement. The minimalist approach to the design is represented formally in the exterior though rational and volumetric expressions. The massing is defined by clean lines and careful articulation of volumes with contrasting materials. Internally, the layout is stripped down to clean spaces free of structure and open to one another. The project was an exercise in designing a house that encompasses a pure diagram while retaining its function.

In its purest concept, the Highcliff Residence consists of two flared bars connected and covered by a single sloping roof. Inspiration was drawn from the Japanese Shibori fan with the idea of creating shelter for the house and directing views with a single design move. Distinct spaces for public (exposed and open) and private (secluded) organically developed within the geometry of the house. The central courtyard succinctly expresses the spirit and personality of the project as the confluence of the man- made structure with nature.
