The design challenge of this project is to balance the visual penetration and keep the sense of security at the same time. How to reserve four old Comphor trees in this site is also the issue. The designer tries to hierarchy the boundaries as the design strategy. The 5 concrete walls overlap each other and placed unparalleled by the big trees. They create transitional spaces for wandering and planting between the public field. For people both inside and outside, the walls become the canvas of shadows and light.

In an idyllic natural setting in Shanghai suburbs, the aim of this house renovation is to re-connect the access of the residents to the nature. The designer not only tries to create "circles" flowing mutually from inside to outside, but also apply Scientific Feng Shui to integrate the physical environment with functions. The courtyard plays a role of visual and mental core which makes it possible that when people walk, sit, cook, eat, study or even sleep as if the wind, the water, the sun and the trees are around.

Qing, a color representing Vitality in Chinese culture, becomes a mantra which guides the house to be designed as a dynamic canvas. Due to the low floor height of this building, two voids are created to make a contrast which helps compress space to result horizontal and vertical extension. One by the curve glass wall shapes the stairs into a flower blossom booming upward. The other void connects the formal and private living rooms on different floors and further extends to the glass conservatory till the closed prayer room. Such a void gives the house a flow- dark and bright, in and out.

The designer tries to refurbish a new architectural language which goes with the remained parts. Two solid blocks are designed to lower traffic interference. The retracted entrance space is set between them. The largest addition is the cantilever on the west side. The French windows interweave the tree shadows and water waves to the inside. Besides the window glass, the use of materials is simplified to two elements: blue brick and white wall, which are common in Chinese traditional architecture. But varied construction details are to explored to create more expressions out of less materials.
