FREEDOM PARK URBAN SPACE by Eleftherios Piskitzis
FREEDOM PARK URBAN SPACE
FREEDOM PARK URBAN SPACE
As the aim of the project was to create a showcase for South Africa’s identity, national heritage and place of celebration, the main theme for the Freedom Park Project was to express unity in diversity, of extreme importance in present day circumstances all over the world. The spiral path of the park plays the role of unifying core for the elements that make Freedom Park an experience for reflection, self exploration and enlightenment. These elements are Freedom Park Museum, the Gathering Space, the Gardens of Rememberance and the Memorial, the Wall of Rememberance as well as a series of smaller scale “green follies” dispersed in the park. They form a so-called update version of an initiation rite in which the visitors remember and acknowledges history celebrates, and make dreams for the future. The spiral path is paved with a mixture of textures ribbed faced concrete, bricks, as well as stone in irregular patterns, but close to human scale and low-key as an intervention so as to subtly guide the visitors through the site.

CHRYSALIS PARK Park
The Chrysalis Park designed for a 1.5-mile-long elevated rail structure on Manhattan's West Side, which was constructed in the 1930s as part of one of New York City's largest investments in transportation infrastructure, called the West Side Improvement Project. No trains have run on it in over 20 years. A lush urban wilderness, nearly seven acres in total, has seeded itself on the line's tracks. A vision for a linear park above the N.Y with sustainability design considerations and various leisure activities.

Eco-Tech Square
The revitalization project of the National Resistance Square, tackles the desire to reestablish the square’s character as a place of leisure and encounter that it once was. The new design shares the plot into four welcoming zones connected to one another by green and shaded alleys created in continuity to the surrounding urban network. They offer areas for cooling down, relaxing, playing and wandering, each featuring either solar electricity production, rainwater collection, waste separation, compost processing and energy sobriety.
